Chester Castle to open for free event

English Heritage is organising a free event at Chester Castle as part of the 2024 Heritage Open Days Festival.

The event will portray what happened at the castle during the Civil War, with visitors given the opportunity to engage with tales of cavalry horses and soldiers, as well as learn what life was like for civilians during this turbulent time and the role women played in the war. Visitors will also be able to dress up in armour and watch displays.

In addition, visitors can also take in the Agricola Tower, which is described on the English Heritage website as follows:

“The 12th-century Agricola Tower was the first stone gateway to Chester Castle, which had been founded by William the Conqueror in 1070 in the south-west part of the city. On the first floor is the chapel of St Mary de Castro, which contains some exceptionally fine wall paintings from about 1240.”

Visitors can also get a great view of the city and surrounding area by climbing to the roof of the tower. The event will take place on Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of September from 10am to 3pm. Even dogs on leads are welcome, and entry is free.
