In a survey conducted by consumer magazine Which?, Chester has narrowly missed out on the top spot for breaks to medium-sized UK cities.
Chester received an average score of 80%, just below Bath with 82%. In the categories of value for money, food and drink, cultural sights, ease of getting around, shopping, and crowds, the city received four stars. It only received three stars for parking, however, its lowest mark. Chester compared well with Bath for most categories, but the latter ultimately clinched victory thanks to a higher score for cultural sights.
Which? explained how it carried out the research:
“In April 2024, we asked 3,967 Which? members to rate UK cities and towns they’d visited for leisure purposes and stayed in for at least one night in the past two years (since April 2022). We received reports of 7,187 experiences.”
The most popular small city was Wells in Somerset by a country mile. Perhaps surprisingly, Liverpool emerged as the most popular big city to visit with a score of 84%, just edging ahead of the historic cities of Edinburgh and York with 83% each and well above the capital, which received just 76%. Visitors cited the Albert Dock, the Beatles museum, the two cathedrals, and the Walker Gallery as reasons to visit.
