Chester rated top racecourse for Instagram

In a new study by The Winners Enclosure, Chester Racecourse has been rated the most “Instagrammable” of all the 85 operational racecourses in the UK and Ireland.

The study counted the number of hashtags on Instagram for each racecourse in 2023 and divided this by the racecourse’s capacity to give an indication of how often visitors shared their experiences through the social media platform.

At 2.83 posts per spectator, Chester Racecourse had almost double the ratio of the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse, its closest competitor.

Chester Racecourse has a capacity of 25,000 and is the oldest operational racecourse in the world, having been first opened in 1539. Last year, it clocked up 70,700 posts on Instagram, reflecting the admiration that punters have for the photogenic racecourse.

Cheltenham, which hosts the annual Cheltenham Festival, was tagged the most of any racecourse in the UK and Ireland, with it being mentioned in 98,900 posts in 2023. Nevertheless, it has a much higher capacity of 68,500, so its posts-per-spectator ratio rated at just 1.44. Galway came third with 1.38 posts-per-spectator, making it the most popular Irish racecourse on Instagram.

Having the oldest racecourse in the world is just one of the many factors that contribute to Chester’s cultural charm.
