Chester student overcomes language barrier to come top in year

In its series of student experiences, the University of Chester has published the story of Oliwia Paluszewicz, who went on to get the highest mark in the cohort for her programme despite arriving in the UK from Poland at age 14 with no grounding in the curriculum for UK schools and a limited ability to speak English.

Nevertheless, Oliwia learned English quickly enough to get the GCSEs needed to progress to a level 3 Diploma in Early Childhood Education, before enrolling at the University of Chester for the BA (Hons) Early Childhood programme in September 2021. She then flourished on the programme thanks to her dedication and hard work with support and advice from faculty staff. Her interest in the field then led her to enrol on the full-time programme for MA Education, Society and Globalisation.

Dr Paula Hamilton, the leader for this programme and a dissertation supervisor, said:

“Oliwia is a remarkable young woman, who signifies what can be achieved with hard work, enthusiasm and a positive working relationship with tutors. I am delighted she has decided to join MA Education, Society and Globalisation and very much look forward to continuing to observe and support her educational journey.”
