Chester’s iconic zoo has shared an extremely rare video of an anoa calf being born.
Anoa are only found in the wild in Sulawesi, an Indonesian island. They are endangered and one of the world’s smallest wild cattle species. Deforestation, hunting and other human activities have drastically diminished their numbers, so the birth is a big event for the world’s population of anoa. A mere 2,500 anoa are thought to be still living in the wild, which is why they are listed as an endangered species. Interventions like this from Chester Zoo are therefore important for preventing them from going extinct.
Callum Garner, a keeper at the zoo, said:
“Anoa are incredibly shy and elusive animals and so to be able to witness a calf being born and then see those magical first moments between mum and baby is very special indeed. We’re privileged to be able to share this remarkable footage with the world.”
The keepers at the zoo have named her “Kasimbar”. She has already started walking and ventured outside her den under the supervision of Darcy, her mother, so visitors to the zoo may see her.
The conservation efforts of Chester Zoo, which is not far from the city centre, are a great source of pride for the city. If you’re someone who’s been attracted to study here, remember that you can find quality shared student housing in Chester, often without even having to pay a deposit up front.
