Five places to visit within an hour of Chester

While the historic city of Chester has much to offer, there may come a point in your student years when you fancy going a bit further afield, whether it’s to experience nature and landmarks or take in the culture of a bigger city. Here are five places you can get to in less than an hour using public transport.

First, you could go to the beach at Colwyn Bay and stroll along it or watch the tide come in from a café. Colwyn Bay Station is only a 45-minute train ride from Chester Station.

Next, in just 41 minutes by train, you could be in Liverpool visiting the iconic Anfield Stadium or Penny Lane. There are also plenty of places to shop, and the Albert Docks has restaurants and bars with a picturesque view. The other big city in the area is of course Manchester, from where much of the country’s great music originated. It’s only 50 minutes away by train.

The fourth place you could visit is the 140-acre Birkenhead Park, which has a number of walking trails and Grade 1 listed buildings and bridges. Get a train to Birkenhead Central Station and then a bus to Park Road East to be there in 50 minutes. Finally, you can be in the area of the iconic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in 50 minutes by catching a train to Ruabon Station, followed by a bus to Trevor Old Station.

Of course, having student accommodation near Chester city centre gives you a great base for exploring the wider area.
