Grosvenor Park to host popular production

The Grosvenor Park Open Air is a popular summer event in Chester, and this year, theatre lovers will be able to rewind to the 19th century with an outdoor theatrical adaptation of the film Gangs of New York.

The Storyhouse, an arts centre in Chester, organises the event to bring the work of famous playwrights like Arthur Miller and William Shakespeare, so that people may enjoy this together with a picnic in the sunshine of the warmer months.

The original film starred Daniel Day Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, and was directed by Martin Scorsese. The historical drama tells a tale of love, betrayal and the quest for power as John Morrissey, an Irish immigrant, tries to realise his own version of the American dream.

The Storyhouse website says about the play:

“Experience a gripping tale of love, betrayal and the relentless pursuit of power with the riveting story of John Morrissey, an ambitious Irish immigrant who navigates the perilous climb of the American dream. Witness his rise as both a feared gang leader and a respected politician.”

The play will run from July 19 to August 31, with standard tickets costing £22.50 or £20.25 for Storyhouse members. Drinks packages and wood-fired pizzas can also be ordered along with the tickets.
