Chester’s iconic Rows, which date back to the 13th century, are being celebrated with a whole month of free events.

Dubbed “Rowvember”, the programme of events has been organised by archaeologist James Dixon and Chester Heritage Festival in collaboration with Cheshire West and Chester Council. This novel initiative seeks to get visitors to experience and explore the elevated walkways in a new, exciting way. It will also highlight how Chester treasures the Rows as a historic architectural marvel, thanks to its lively business community and proud heritage as the oldest such shopping arcade in the world.

Among the events will be free guided tours detailing the architectural significance and interesting history of the Rows. Alternatively, visitors can follow walking routes that have been specially designed to allow them to explore the Rows in their own time. There will also be performances from pop-up choirs and dancers, as well as film screenings.

Lisa Denson, a councillor with responsibility for arts, libraries and culture, said:

“The Rows are not just a shopping destination—they’re a living piece of medieval history that continues to thrive in our modern city. Rowvember is our opportunity to showcase these remarkable structures and the wonderful businesses that call them home.”

The free events will be a great way for new students to learn more about the city where they will be living and studying. If you’re a Chester student in need of digs, Bed Student Rental has shared student accommodation near Chester university, so check our listings to learn more.
