Students team up with Chester Zoo on hedgehog initiative

The Hedgehog Friendly Campus group at the University of Chester is to collaborate with Chester Zoo in helping hedgehogs on campus by creating an environment that will be more favourable to them.

This new joint venture falls under the zoo's Networks for Nature initiative, which is a broad-based campaign that seeks to forge community collaborations and robust partnerships for encouraging wildlife to develop in the North-West Cheshire area. Prior to pledging the partnership, the Volunteering and Mentoring Team and the School of Natural Sciences at the university supported Katie Whitfield and Lyndon Howson in representing the students involved in the university’s Hedgehog Group project.

The pledge covers various aspects, such as installing wildlife cameras and sharing data, improving campus habitats for wildlife, expanding the range of hedgehog-friendly areas, and organising days to collect litter.

Chester Zoo’s director of conservation education, Charlotte Smith said about the trailblazing collaboration, which is the first nature-based pledge that the zoo has formed with a local community in this manner:

“Pledges can help to motivate people to make positive conservation behaviour changes. That’s why we were delighted to work with the team at the Hedgehog Friendly Campus project and the wider student body at the University of Chester, to develop this new pledge for nature.”

The University of Chester strives to support its students wherever it can. If you’re a Chester student, or about to become one, you can find no-fees student accommodation in Chester with bills included in the monthly rent.
