Chester University’s Riverside Museum is presenting an open day in early February.

Operated by the FHMs Historical Society, the museum is in the Wheeler Building near Chester University accommodation and will be open from 1 pm to 4 pm for staff, students and other visitors.

The Museum is celebrated for its permanent collection containing artefacts from the world of medicine, but also midwifery, social work and nursing. One of the prized items on display is an original letter from Balaclava, penned by statistician and social reformer Florence Nightingale, who is credited as the founder of nursing as we know it today.

An exhibition called “Returning Home” will also be on show that takes a local focus on the First World War. It aims to offer insight into what a Cheshire soldier returning from the front would have encountered back home. The exhibit covers a range of aspects including the psychological impact of the war, medical advances, home life, country practices, volunteer nurses and volunteering, social welfare and working women.

This exhibition is the creation of volunteers from the FHMS Historical Society, and has been refurbished thanks to the generous assistance of Big Heritage and the Lottery Fund.

The University of Chester Riverside Museum Open will take place on Wednesday, February 5 in the Wheeler Building which is sited on Castle Drive by the River Dee in Chester city centre. Access to the museum can be gained by a flight of steps up to reception and by taking the lift or stairs down to the basement.
