University of Chester celebrates successful Festival of Ideas

The University of Chester has celebrated the success of its inaugural Festival of Ideas, which took place from July 4 to July 7.

The festival offered creative, thought-provoking, informative and entertaining free talks for all ages and interests on a diverse range of topics. The activities also included events like guided walks, discussion panels, interactive activities, pop-up exhibitions, music and dance, and readings.

Some notable people spoke during the festival, including the university’s chancellor, Dr Gyles Brandreth; journalist Carole Cadwalladr, who has been nominated for a Pulitzer price; historian, broadcaster, writer, filmmaker and presenter Professor David Olusoga; and presenter, campaigner, broadcaster, writer, parliamentarian and actress Baroness Floella Benjamin.

The lead organiser Katherine Wilson, who works at the University of Chester as an Associate Professor of Later Medieval European History, said that it had been:

“…an amazing four days filled with learning, ideas, inspiration, fun and celebration. After many months of planning and preparing, it was extremely rewarding to see all the smiles, to showcase our city, the creativity found here and its reach across the globe, and hear how much people have enjoyed the events.

She also expressed her thanks to everyone who was part of the festival.
