A nine-minute, one-shot drama made at the University of Chester has won the top prize at an international film festival.
The drama, titled Sutures, was entered in the One Shot Film Festival, which was held near Barcelona at the Terrassa City of Film. The contest accepts submissions from all nationalities around the world under the condition that they are filmed without cuts and in sequence. Sutures won the top prize amounting to €1,200 after beating over 1,800 other entries. The films detail the ethical and procedural challenges faced by two nurses in a hectic urgent care ward.
Sutures was made in collaboration with the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting (WASA). Senior Lecturer in Nursing Tracy Ross appeared in the film and was its executive producer. She recalled how she suggested to WASA using the Wheeler building’s nursing simulation facilities, which include a maternity unit and intensive care, as well as two ward areas. She added:
“It’s a great opportunity to have collaboration between the university and WASA, but also it’s educational for the students and highlights a really important message about organ donation. A lot of people don’t know about the opt-out system, about seeking family support and letting their family know their wishes.”
The film should certainly be of interest for anyone studying nursing at the University of Chester. If you’re one of these, or someone studying any subject for that matter, remember that you can get bills-included student accommodation in Chester close to both the university campuses and Chester city centre.
