A pub in Chester has received an award from the Chester Civic Trust following a £400,000 renovation in 2022.
Located on Hoole Lane, the Lock Vaults was boarded up for many years prior to its redevelopment. The paint of its mock-Tudor exterior was peeling off and covered in graffiti, and weeds were growing unfettered. After driving past the pub over the years, Carl Burleigh committed to redeveloping and running the pub, which is owned by Heineken subsidiary Star Pubs and Bars.
The pub’s facade now features bi-fold windows, a new roof, and a wood and charcoal grey exterior. It has a vintage feel inside, with the decorative tiles, brickwork and wood floors having been exposed as part of the revamp. The two bar areas both show live sport, and the lounge area has a working fire. The bar serves cask ales and craft beers in addition to lagers, wines and spirits. The pub also serves traditional pub food such as pies and artisan pizzas.
Chester Civic Trust’s chair, Christine Russell, said:
“We want to encourage investment into our city and particularly to recognise great projects that breathe new life into Chester and its communities. This is an excellent example of this and we applaud Carl and his colleagues.”
If you’re a student in Chester and like Hoole as an area, you can find shared student accommodation in Hoole. Bills are often included in the rent, and there may even be no upfront fees to pay.
