The University of Chester (U of C) was recently given “University of Sanctuary” status in acknowledgement of its ongoing work to create a welcoming culture on campus focused on awareness and inclusivity.
Chester received its new title from City of Sanctuary UK, a coordinated national network of services, venues and organisations that includes councils, libraries, theatres and universities that both support and welcome people looking for asylum such as refugees.
A celebratory event took place at U of C on June 17. Attendees gathered at Exton Park, the main campus on Parkgate Road sited near Chester University accommodation, for a special presentation from Rev Dr Inderjit Singh Bhogal (President and founder of City of Sanctuary UK).
The award followed three years of effort from Chester University to show its strong commitment to providing a campus culture of support safety and inclusivity via various community-focused activities and multiple research and teaching strategies.
The submission to gain “University of Sanctuary” status has been described as collaborative effort that included input from faculty members throughout the educational institution. This included both professional support staff and academic teams.
Instances of U of C’s support included major celebrations like World Refugee Day and Refugee Week, awarding students seeking asylum with dedicated Sanctuary Scholarships and supplying both emotional and practical support to its sanctuary students.
Sanctuary scholarships are especially designed to help students with a refugee or asylum-seeker background to gain access to higher education.
Student experience manager at Chester, Sandra Hughes, commented that she was proud of the university’s new status and applauded the dedication of all involved who made it possible.
