Research conducted by retail specialists GlobalData has named Chester’s Eastgate Street as the third-best high street in the country for its eclectic mix of shops, entertainment venues, restaurants and pubs.
GlobalData conducted the research in May 2024 through an online survey distributed to a sample of 2,000 people who were nationally representative of UK consumers in general. It sought to establish how they feel about their high streets and what makes a high street a generally great experience. Chester received praise for its overall aesthetic appeal and its diverse specialist and independent retailers. Historic features like the Rows were also mentioned.
American Express commissioned the research. Its general manager for merchant services in the UK, Dan Edelman, said all of the streets that were ranked highly in the research provided outstanding shopping experiences combined with opportunities to relax and socialise, adding:
“Consumers continue to value our high streets and believe they will remain important well into the future. While there is no one solution to guarantee ongoing success, it’s encouraging to see there are plenty of opportunities for collaboration to help deliver this winning formula.”
The fact that Chester has an exceptional retail and hospitality scene will of course not be news to the many people who come to work and study in Chester and make it their home. If you’re one of these and looking for accommodation, Bed Student Rentals has student accommodation in Chester near the city centre, so you can take advantage of its vibrant scene.
