Chester Cathedral will soon showcase intriguing discoveries that metal detecting clubs have uncovered.

Entitled “Treasures Unearthed 2025”, the event is being held in the Chapter House of the grade-listed building in July and is entirely free to attend. Undergraduates and postgraduates undertaking courses in Archaeology and History at Chester University’s Exton Park campus can encounter a diverse range of fascinating items found beneath the ground.

The upcoming event will find Chester Cathedral populated by metal detecting devotees from all over the North West. Enthusiasts will set up stalls and display their most interesting and precious discoveries. Close to student accommodation in Chester city centre on St Werburgh Street, the cathedral hosts a range of events throughout the calendar year, from candle lit concerts to arts exhibitions.

The single-day event also invites attendees to bring unidentified or worthy finds along with them. Finds Liaison Officers from the Portable Antiquities Scheme will be present on the day to identify find and record them while providing valuable advice and insights.

Dave Edwards, Chairman for the National Council of Metal Detecting (NCMD) commented on the event:

“It should be a great day out. We’ve had tremendous support from clubs from throughout the region and it’s a great venue, full of history in its own right.”

The exhibition will also feature traders providing tips and bargains, and refreshments will be on offer at the venue.

Treasures Unearthed 2025 will take place at Chester Cathedral on Saturday, July 19. The event begins at 10 am and runs until 4 pm.
