Weather-wise, UK summers can be unpredictable, but Chester is prepared with both indoor and outdoor activities that students can enjoy. With an understanding that postgraduates and undergraduates at U of C have different budgets and interests, here we look at a range activities in and around the city over the summer months ahead.

Explore Grosvenor Park

Located in the city centre, Grosvenor Park is a mecca for students in the warmer months of the year. Large enough to find a quiet spot for studying while small enough to find friends when meeting up, the much-loved green space is an ideal place to make the most of sunny days and more daylight hours. Perfect for picnics, the park is also free for everyone to enjoy, and summer sees it host pop up events like pizza shops, bars, barbeques and local artists playing at the bandstand.

Stroll along the River Dee

A peaceful place for a walk, the banks of the River Dee are picturesque in the height of summer with an abundance of Cheshire flora and fauna to appreciate. Students can stroll its length and chat or take a ride on affordable boat tours, while adventurous souls can hire a kayak or paddleboard and get physical. Pubs and eateries like the Boat Inn, The Moorings and Hickory’s Smokehouse are also located by the river for refreshments.

Tour the city walls

Chester’s Roman Walls are one of its renowned landmarks but also offer a fresh and panoramic perspective on the city. Free to traverse, students can soak up Chester’s rich history or pay and enjoy a guided tour led by a Roman Legionary.

Visit Chester Zoo

Offering a student discount, Chester Zoo is dedicated to educating visitors about the plight of endangered animals. Almost too big to be appreciated all in one day, every trip to the zoo is different. New for this summer is the Heart of Africa development. The biggest zoo enclosure project in Britain to date, the enclosure is designed to faithfully recreate the African savannah.

Discover the Blue Planet Aquarium

Just 6.5 miles from Chester in Ellesmere Port, the Blue Planet Aquarium offers a wealth of underwater life including the largest collection of sharks in the whole of Europe. Other highlights include divers feeding fish in a live show and a 71-metre underwater tunnel for close encounters with astonishing sea life.

Chester Racecourse

Students seeking thrills can experience action on the track at Chester’s famous racecourse. In summer, the record-breaking race venue takes on a whole new image, with live DJs playing music into the evening after the racecard completes.

Drink summer cocktails

Finally, what would summer be without some cool mixed drinks? The city has an abundance of cutting-edge cocktail bars to try from Kuckoo to BarLounge. Be At One Chester on Watergate Street is also a favourite for those at U of C due to its discounted drinks for students.
