Music students at Chester University’s Kingsway campus will rejoice to hear that a summer opera is headed to the city in June.

Chester Town Hall has been selected to present Chester Operatic Society’s brand-new production “The Merry Widow”, an operetta by composer Franz Lehár.

Located on Northgate Street near student accommodation in Chester city centre, the town hall will undergo an enchanting transformation for upcoming performances. Its main assembly room, often used for conferences, weddings, concerts and other important events will become a ballroom in the Balkan embassy in Paris.

The operatic society’s chairman, William Shaw commented:

“The Town Hall is a perfect setting for a sumptuous ballroom and the show will bring some real summer sunshine.”

Directed by Ann Marie McMahon and Juliet Miles, the operetta will also feature AMT Productions’ talented dancers with choreography from Abigail Bradbury. A light-hearted yarn, the operetta finds a wealthy widow the centre of attention as guest of honour at a ball with all attending attempting to take her money.

Louise Ellinson will play the role of Anna Glavari, the operetta’s widow. Cheshire-born, Ellinson is concert soloist and has sung on stage with numerous ensembles in the North West like the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and is director for the University of Liverpool Chamber Choirs.

The Merry Widow will now be on stage at 7.30pm in Chester Town Hall from June 19 to June 21, with an extra matinee show at 2pm on the last date.
