Whether you’ve come from a distant country or just 20 miles down the road, you may feel homesick when you start your studies at university, so here are some tips for dealing with it.
First, it helps if you budget for trips back home, as you won’t miss out on special family events like birthdays and anniversaries. It can brighten your mood considerably during term time if you have future events to look forward to.
Second, continue using the same cleaning and hygiene products that you use at home, such as shower gel, soap, deodorant, perfume and so on. You may be in what seems like an alien environment, but keeping your scents consistent might work to calm and comfort you.
Third, keep yourself busy by doing the things you enjoy and visiting places you like. Chester has a lot to offer such as walks around the Roman Walls and along the river, an excellent zoo and Grosvenor Park. Doing what you enjoy will not only take your mind off feeling homesick—it will help you come to think of Chester as your new home.
Finally, if it all possible, invite your family and friends to visit you, so you can share some new experiences together. If it’s not feasible for them to travel, stay in touch about your new life.
If you’re coming here to study, you can find shared student housing in Chester in popular areas like Hoole and the Garden Quarter, sometimes with no upfront fees and bills included in the rent.
