
The University of Chester (U of C) has announced that its Athletics Union teams have raised close to £20k for charitable causes during the academic year running 2024 to 2025. The landmark achievement is the largest amount of money the teams have ever raised to date.
Based on Parkgate Road at the Exton Park campus near Chester university accommodation, the Athletics Union lets students participate in a dizzying array of different sports and activities.
Chester students from archery, football, netball, badminton, cheerleading, softball, rounders, equestrian, dance, pool, rowing volleyball, hockey, rugby union, pole fitness, basketball and lacrosse raised over £19,500 via participation and organisation of a diverse selection of events.
Head of Sports at Chester, University, Ali Cutler, commented:
“It is fantastic to see how much they give back to the community and we are so proud of them.”
At a recent awards ceremony that took place at The Crowne Plaza hotel in Chester, U of C’s Athletics Union issued the netball team with the Charity Recognition Award after it raised an astonishing £4,264 for charity. Chester’s cheerleading team were close behind with £3,449.
The union’s clubs participated in an eclectic mix of unique challenges to raise much-needed funds for worthy causes. These included hikes up Snowdon, bingo nights, bake sales, a Christmas toy appeal, sleepovers on hockey pitches and in a football stadium, and 24-hour archery shoots and badminton games.
Charities awarded fund from their efforts included Breast Cancer UK, Movember, Chester Aid to the Homeless, Kids Bank, RSPCA, MIND, West Cheshire Foodbank and more.
