A recent study has shown that reports that the pub scene in the UK is in a steep decline have been seriously exaggerated, at least in the city of Chester.
A brand-new survey conducted by SumUp has found that pub culture across the country is in fact having a resurgence in key cities of the UK.
While there have always been a wide range of watering holes in the city, students in the university will be pleased to hear that between 2020 and 2024, Chester has seen new pub openings increase by 22%. When seeking housing, students often choose accommodation near Chester university for studies but also apartments close to amenities like pubs and clubs, making it easier and less expensive to return home after nights out.
Many other regional locations were cited in the study on British pubs. While Cheltenham, Walsall and Blackpool had slightly fewer new pubs (20%) than Chester, Mansfield and the city of Nottingham surpassed it in the last four years with a 62.5% rise in licensed establishments. This amounted to 25 new pubs opening during the period.
The pub scene in Chester is particularly popular with students at the university as many venues offer discounts to those studying the city with a valid NUS card. These include much-loved pubs like The Slug and Lettuce and the Red Lion based on Northgate Street, but also options like Rosies nightclub and the Off The Wall bar, which serves up special cocktail deals on St John Street.
