The local council has received plans from Chester Race Company for how it plans to redevelop the world’s oldest operating racecourse.

The racecourse is following a 15-year strategic plan, and its detailed plans have been submitted following consultations with shareholders and the surrounding community. The plan aims to increase the capacity of the racecourse.

Kay Elliot, the architects commissioned with the redevelopment said its design will follow the “Deva Meadow” concept and:

“The proposals offer the unique opportunity to: improve the long term viability of the racecourse; provide a sector leading facility that will enhance the wider offerings of the city; enhance the visual appearance and setting of the Racecourse from the surrounding area; and improve the environmental performance and increase on-site bio-diversity.”

The plan includes removing the tented village that is used during the racing season and replacing it with a permanent hospitality venue. A facility hub with workshops, offices, a central restaurant and accommodation for stable staff will also be built on Saddlery Way. The plans also include further hotel rooms and the refurbishment of two of the stands, as well as an enhanced ring area for pre-parading. The landscaping and facilities at the Dee enclosure will also be enhanced.

Chester’s iconic racecourse of course just one of the many great things that attracts people to study in Chester. In addition to accommodation on the university campuses, remember that you can also get shared student housing in Chester, sometimes with no upfront fees to pay.
