A music single made by students, alumni and staff at the University of Chester soared to the top five spots of a prominent UK club chart to join the likes of Rihanna, Diplo and Calvin Harris.
The charity single ‘I Won’t Let Christmas Make Me Cry’ was released to raise money for Women’s Aid. It was the first single containing the word “Christmas” to make the top five positions of the Music Week Commercial Pop club chart since it started publishing online in 2007.
Jim Mason, the university’s music production programme leader, and Ali Reece, a music graduate, wrote and executively produced the song. A total of two alumni, four members of the university staff and 15 students contributed to the single.
Mason said that it was remarkable for an independent university production to get to the top of a prominent club chart: He said that they are not that many dance-friendly Christmas songs with a:
“…a large selection of remixes, so it’s a great achievement for us. I’m also really pleased that we are able to give all revenue from the project directly to the charity Women’s Aid, so I’d love people to stream and download the main track and remixes as much as possible.”
Reece said the experience had also been a great way to reconnect with staff and students at the university. If you’re also studying at the University of Chester, remember that there is a broad range of off-campus student accommodation near Chester university, quite often with utility bills included in the rent.
