Recruitment and retail leaders recently praised students at the Chester Business School after they participated in an assessment exercise.

Specialists in retail and major brands alike were impressed with the Chester University students’ extensive skills and knowledge as they rose to the challenge, completing a series of set tasks.

The all-star assessment panel included senior representatives from Marks & Spencer, Cheshire Oaks, Liverpool ONE, Matalan and Cushman and Wakefield, as well as academic experts from the university.

Customer service manager for Marks & Spencer, Kathryn Hand, commented:

“It was a great opportunity to see firsthand the emerging talent in the retail industry. I was impressed by the in-depth analysis the students completed on their chosen retailers, as well as their individual suggestions for improvement opportunities.”

The assessment ran at Queen’s Park campus, where the business school is based on Parkgate Road near Chester university accommodation. Under the watchful eyes of recruiters and retailers, the business managers-to-be demonstrated their innovation, skills and learning while successfully navigating each test.

A total of 14 Chester business students participated to test their understanding of strategic and contemporary retailing principles in preparation for their careers after graduation.

They performed critical analysis on a selected leading retailer of their own choice, with names including Asda, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Goldsmiths Jewellers and Greggs. Students then presented their in-depth research to the panel of business school lecturers and industry guests and answered interview questions. The event concluded with a group problem solving challenge under close observation.
